On Est La
Pronounced as “Oh ney la” is French that loosely translates to We are here and could be used as “we outsideee!”.
Why am I giving out this very expensive French language class for free you might ask, well, in reality it’s not a free class because I’m all about my bag, it’s just I’ve somehow been made mouthpiece for one of the most important fashion influences of all time; SEX — the one influence that stands in the heart of the world of fashion and screams on the top of its lungs On est la!

“I never quite understood it, this sex symbol. I always thought symbols were those things you clash together! That’s the trouble, a sex symbol becomes a thing. I just hate to be a thing. But if I’m going to be a symbol of something, I’d rather have it sex than some other things they’ve got symbols of.”
— Marilyn Monroe in an interview for Life, 1962.
Sex is the core function of humanity, a spiritual act that connects two souls with the divine.
How do I put sex and spirituality in one sentence?
The real question is;
How do you not know it’s always been like this?
How did you not know that Spirituality is in fact connecting with nature while sex is connection/intimacy with another person(which is natural and thereby spiritual)?
Well, most cultures and religions are sexually repressive and peddle sex as an act of baby-making or a medium for fast release, so I wouldn’t hold it over your head.
The odd side of repression is; when things are repressed, they’re subdued, not erased.
So as a method of marketing, fashion houses and brands banked on the base nature of sexuality.
Whatever culture/moral/ethic, something must physically attract a person and pull the person, no matter how slowly or subtly to the idea of intimacy.
Ranging from corset dresses to corset tops, crop tops to tank tops, maxi to midi to mini skirts, even trousers, shorts and bum shorts — made either within generally perceived modesty or generally perceived provocation, all ranges still lead us down to the performance of baby-making acts.
The very daring & provocative looking designs are what catch my eye, the ones that get you thinking… subtlety where?
ACT 1: MARILYN MONROE (the sex symbol and fashion icon) became one of the worlds most perfect models for most designers who were open to base their designs on the primal instinct of sex because she was at that time and even after regarded as the sexiest woman in the entertainment world.

ACT 2: THIERRY MUGLER(the IT designer), has designed so many looks for so many seasons and without fail fashionably enhances the sexiness of women of various sizes and nationality. Names that have dominated the fashion and entertainment world through the influence of sex like; Rihanna, Megan the stallion, Cardi B and many more have donned his designs.

ACT 3: ASHLEY OKOLI(the present and most prominent pace setter in Nigeria), if there was a sex symbol list in Nigeria, Ashley(popularly known as Ashh.ok) would be on the No.1 spot. She is as fashionable as she’s sexy and nobody does it better because she does it different.

With these few points of mine, I hope I’ve been able to convince you that fashion and sex are intertwined in ways we wouldn’t be able to run from.
I got curious though, so after Marilyn Monroe, were there other popularly known sex symbols in fashion and entertainment?
Yes of course!
ACT 4: THE Italian Gina Lollobrigida.
(July 1927- January 2023).
